The excavated mounds of one of the great cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation, first settled around 3300 BCE.
Walk the brick foundations of a city that, at its height around 2600–1900 BCE, covered about 150 hectares and may have housed some 23,500 people. Archaeologists have found planned streets, drains, granaries and seals carved with the still-undeciphered Indus script.
Much of the site was damaged in the 1850s when railway builders took its bricks for track ballast, which makes what survives all the more precious. Harappa has been on UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage list since 2004.
